A real rarity: Philastre

This is the "Morder of Galswinthe": "Le Meurtre de la reine Galswinthe", by the 'peintre-decorateur' Humanité René Philastre (Fils), one of the most erotic 'academian scenographers'. He decorated, inter alia, the famous "Cénotaphe" ship that fetched Napoleon's ashes from S.Helen.

This painting can/should be seen in the Soissons municipal Museum (since Galswinthe was the wife of Chilperic, Merowingian King of Soissons). But the painting seems damaged on the bottom left corner.

And the story? Well Gregory of Tours ends his account as follow: "King Chilperic wept for the death of Galswinth, but within a few days he asked Fredegund to sleep with him again".
